New York Acupuncturist

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture

Dr. Jared Hanson N.D., L.Ac. is a New York acupuncturist and doctor of naturopathic medicine in Manhattan specializing in the treatment of chronic diseases with acupuncture and Chinese medicine. To make an appointment, please call 917-607-5035 or email drjaredhanson@gmail.com.

As a New York acupuncturist, Dr. Hanson practices Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which has been a predominant medical system in Asia for thousands of years. The underlying principle of TCM is that health is balance and that disease can only be healed by restoring balance. When the relationships between energy and substance, heat and cold, interiority and exteriority, or yin and yang (the fundamental duality of all things) become disordered, ill health and disease result.

The tools Dr. Hanson uses as a New York acupuncturist to address these imbalances may include herbal formulas, acupuncture, moxibustion (the application of heat), dietary therapy, qi gong (therapeutic exercise), tui na (therapeutic massage), or other physical therapies such as cupping or scraping.

Some concepts in TCM are completely foreign to Western medicine. One of these is qi, the fundamental energy that flows throughout the body along pathways called meridians. Acupuncturists believe our health can become out of balance if qi becomes deficient or stagnant.

An acupuncturist will insert very fine sterile needles into specific points on the body. The acupuncturist uses these needles to influence the flow of qi throughout your body and to restore balance to the flow of energy and improve health. Acupuncture works by regulating a patient’s qi, supplementing it if the qi is deficient and dispersing it if qi has become stagnant, depending on where the acupuncturist places the needles.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the fundamental energy qi flows through specific channels in your body called meridians. Each meridian is connected to specific organs as well as to other meridians. By taking your pulse, looking at your tongue and considering your health history, Dr. Hanson, New York acupuncturist, will determine which organs or meridians have too much or too little qi and inserts acupuncture needles into specific points to balance the energy in that organ or meridian.

The needles an acupuncturist uses are much smaller than the needles used to take blood or give shots. Patients generally feel very relaxed during and after a treatment by Dr. Hanson, New York acupuncturist. Because no medicines or chemicals are involved, acupuncture can be used while you are on any medication and in conjunction with physical therapy or any other treatment you may be receiving.

The World Health Organization has recognized the ability of an acupuncturist using traditional Chinese medicine to treat over 200 common conditions.

As well as being a New York acupuncturist, Dr. Hanson is also a naturopathic doctor. He often combines acupuncture with herbal medicine, homeopathy or nutrition to maximize the efficacy of the acupuncture treatment.
