Natural Treatment for Osteoporosis and Osteopenia

We all know that calcium is important for maintaining bone density. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as taking a calcium supplement or drinking milk. In addition to optimal calcium intake, we need to maximize calcium absorption, as well as decrease calcium excretion. This involves not only calcium supplementation, but other nutrients that work with calcium to maintain bone density. Certain lifestyle and dietary changes are also fundamental to the maintaining bone density naturally.

Diet and Osteoporosis

Soft drinks, caffeine, alcohol and excess salt all increase the amount of calcium your body loses through excretion and they should all be avoided as much as possible. Similarly, refined sugars such as table sugar and corn syrup have a negative effect on bone density and should be removed from your diet.

The U.S. has the highest rate of dairy consumption and the highest rate of osteoporosis. The reason for this is thought to be the high protein intake of the standard American diet. For this reason, excess protein intake should be avoided and dairy should not be relied upon as the sole source of calcium. Green leafy vegetables are excellent sources of calcium with minimal protein content. They should be consumed every day.

Nutritional Supplements for Osteoporosis

Most calcium supplements supply calcium in the form of calcium carbonate. Calcium can only be absorbed when the stomach contents are acidic and calcium carbonate neutralizes stomach acid, thereby minimizing absorption. Manufacturers use calcium carbonate because its cheap, but unfortunately it’s also ineffective. When buying a calcium supplement, make sure the calcium is in the form of calcium citrate, calcium malate or hydroxyapatite calcium.

Magnesium is another mineral comprising bone and is often deficient in modern diets. Vitamin D is necessary for calcium uptake. Other important nutrients for the natural treatment for osteoporosis are vitamins A and K and the minerals boron, zinc and silica.

Homeopathy and Osteoporosis

Cell salts, a special group of homeopathic remedies, can play a valuable role in increasing bone density naturally.

Lifestyle Factors in Osteoporosis

Certain lifestyle factors are important in the natural treatment for osteoporosis and osteopenia. Quit smoking. We can add decreased bone density to the long list of why smoking is bad for your health. Weight-bearing exercise is important, the body responds to the stress of exercise by increasing bone density. If you have advanced osteoporosis, it is advisable to consult with a personal trainer or physical therapist who has experience working with osteoporosis patients. Getting adequate sunlight ensures a good supply of vitamin D, an important nutrient for maintaining bone density.
