What is Cervical Dysplasia?
Cervical dysplasia is a term used to describe abnormal cells in the uterine cervix. While cervical dysplasia is not cancer, it is considered a precursor to cervical cancer and, despite the fact that cervical dysplasia usually has no symptoms, it cannot be ignored. The likelihood of untreated cervical dysplasia progressing to cancer varies depending on the severity and on the subtype of HPV virus involved, but it is generally a slow process (10 - 15 years) allowing plenty of time for effective treatment.
The reduction in cervical cancer is a victory for modern medicine. Prior to the introduction of the Pap smear and the implementation of regular screening, cervical cancer was much more common. Thanks to regular screening the incidence of cervical cancer has plummeted in this country. Unfortunately, in many countries women do not have access to appropriate screening and cervical cancer is still a leading cause of cancer death. Cervical cancer is a sexually transmitted disease. In the vast majority of cases, cervical dysplasia is associated with a past or present infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), viruses from the same family that cause genital warts.
Cervical dysplasia is also known as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia or CIN and is often rated as CIN I, CIN II, or CIN III with increasing severity. Conventional treatments of cervical dysplasia focus on destroying or removing the affected tissue. Methods to accomplish this include loop electrical excision procedures (LEEP), a conization biopsy, or cauterization by laser, freezing or electricity. Cervical dysplasia also is known to regress without intervention.
Cervical Dysplasia: Holistic Treatment and Natural Remedies
These procedures, while certainly an important option to have in the prevention of cervical cancer, are invasive and do little to address the underlying cause of cervical dysplasia. Cervical dysplasia is caused by a virus, and these procedures neither eliminate the virus nor do they empower the immune system to keep the virus in check. Natural treatments for cervical dysplasia focus on exactly this, eliminating the virus and boosting the immune response.
Many herbs are known to have antiviral activity. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), lomatium (Lomatium dissectum), yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis) are commonly used to treat cervical dysplasia herbally. Other herbs, such as Echinacea, can be used to boost the immune response. Nutritionally, vitamins such as vitamin A, beta carotene, folic acid and vitamin C are used to support the immune response.
While taking these herbs and supplements both internally and locally as suppositories, it is important to make healthy lifestyle and dietary choices. Quitting smoking, increasing fruits and vegetables and decreasing animal products are all important steps.
