The Triple Burner in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Alternative Medicine and Natural Health in NYC

There is no equivalent to the Triple Burner or Sanjiao in conventional Western anatomy. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is classified as a Yang organ and is energetically paired with the Pericardium.

The Triple Burner is divided into three burners: upper, middle and lower. These mysterious burners are responsible for circulating and distributing qi and fluids throughout the Organs and extremities. The upper burner, located above the diaphragm, is related to the Heart and Lungs, it is often compared to a fog. The middle burner, located between the diaphragm and umbilicus, is related to the Spleen and Stomach, it is compared to a froth of bubbles. The lower burner, located below the umbilicus, is related to the Kidney, Bladder and the Large Intestine, it is compared to a drainage ditch.

The energetic channel associated with the Triple Burner begins on the ring finger, travels up the back of the arm, around the ear and ends at the eyebrow.
