Acupuncture for Back Pain

Traditional Chinese Medicine in New York

Acupuncture is a very effective treatment for back pain. Acupuncture for back pain can releive pain and swelling and improve range of motion and mobility. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, chronic back pain is said to be due to a Kidney Deficiency and the goal of treatment is to strengthen the Kidneys. Acute back pain due to a sprain is said to be due to a local stagnation of Blood and Qi and the goal of treatment is to move Qi and Blood.

Acupuncture for back pain involves the insertion of very fine sterile needles into specific points on the body. An acupuncturist uses these needles to influence the flow of vital energy, known as qi, throughout your body and to restore balance to the flow of energy and improve health. Acupuncture works by regulating a patient’s qi, supplementing it if the qi is deficient and dispersing it if qi has become stagnant.

When undergoing an acupuncture for back pain, it is not unusual for acupuncture needles to be placed in points on the body other than the back. These are referred to as "distal points" and are generally more effective than points in the back itself. There are very effective points for back pain on the knees, the hands, the ear and the face.

A typical session of acupuncture for back pain lasts 45 minutes and it is usually recommended to have one session per week in the beginning of treatment. Patients generally feel very relaxed during and after an acupuncture session. The needles used in acupuncture are much smaller than the needles used to take blood or give shots and therefore do not cause pain when inserted.

There are no side effects to acupuncture for back pain.

The written material provided on this website is for informational and educational purposes only. It is not intended to replace the advice of a healthcare professional. Many terms used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, such as Blood or the names of organs, such as the Heart or Liver, have different connotations in TCM than in conventional medicine and should not be interpreted as meaning the same thing. For example, a Heart pattern in Chinese medicine does not necessarily imply a heart disorder in conventional medicine. These words have been capitalized to emphasize this point.
