Acupuncture for Anti-Aging

Traditional Chinese Medicine in New York

Acupuncture is an effective anti-aging treatment. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the symptoms of aging are due to three factors: a decline in Kidney Qi, the accumulation of Phlegm, and the stagnation of Qi and Blood. The goal of acupuncture for anti-aging is to strengthen Kidney Qi, to clear Phlegm, and to move Qi and Blood in the channels. Terms such as Kidney, Blood and Phlegm have different meanings in Traditional Chinese Medicine than in Western medicine.

Acupuncture for anti-aging involves the insertion of very fine sterile needles into specific points on the body. These points are selected based on the individual presentation of each patient, depending on which pattern of energy imbalance is most prominent. This is determined by a careful review of a patient's history, inspection of the tongue and examination of the pulse. Acupuncture needles influence the flow of vital energy, known as Qi, throughout the body and are used to restore balance to the flow of energy and improve health. Acupuncture works by regulating a patient’s qi, supplementing it if the qi is deficient and dispersing it if qi has become stagnant.

A typical session of acupuncture for anti-aging lasts 45 minutes and it is usually recommended to have one session per week in the beginning of treatment. Patients generally feel very relaxed during and after an acupuncture session. The needles used in acupuncture are much smaller than the needles used to take blood or give shots and therefore do not cause pain when inserted.

When undergoing an acupuncture for anti-aging, it is not unusual for acupuncture needles to be placed in points at different parts of the body. A typical treatment may include points on the ears, feet, hands or head.

There are no side effects to acupuncture for anti-aging. Acupuncture can be combined safely with other treatments you may be getting.

The written material provided on this website is for informational and educational purposes only. It is not intended to replace the advice of a healthcare professional. Many terms used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, such as Blood or the names of organs, such as the Heart or Liver, have different connotations in TCM than in conventional medicine and should not be interpreted as meaning the same thing. For example, a Heart pattern in Chinese medicine does not necessarily imply a heart disorder in conventional medicine. These words have been capitalized to emphasize this point.
