Alternative Medicine and Natural Health in NYC
Located just below the knee on the outside of the shinbone, Stomach 36 (also known as ZuSanLi or Leg Three Miles) rivals Large Intestine 4 as the most used acupuncture point. The therapeutic effects of this point are far-reaching. To demonstrate this, I remember that when introducing this point in acupuncture school, my professor listed its indications simply as: ALL.
Stomach 36 is a primary point to boost immunity. It is said that Chinese medicine doctors would moxa this point regularly to maintain a blister and that this constant stimulation would protect them from infection when visiting their patients. This point is also a longevity point used to reduce the effects of aging. Scars on this point (from moxibustion) were supposedly a desirable characteristic when looking for a spouse in ancient China. It is used to preserve health.
Stomach 36 is known as the command point of the abdomen, meaning any disorder affecting the abdomen can be treated with this point, covering abroad range of conditions including digestive troubles.
The Spleen and Stomach in Traditional Chinese Medicine are responsible for the creation of Qi and Blood. An insufficiency of Qi or Blood or both can underlie a myriad of symptoms and diseases. Stomach 36 is the primary point to promote this function of producing Qi and Blood. This use indicates Stomach 36 in any condition of weakness or deficiency.
