Acupuncture Point: Spleen 6
Alternative Medicine and Natural Health in NYC
Spleen 6 is located on the inside of the leg above the ankle and is also known as SanYinJiao or Three Yin Intersection. It has this name because three channels associated with Yin organs meet at this point, giving it the ability to treat conditions affecting the Spleen, Liver and Kidney.
Since these three channels control menstruation and conception, Spleen 6 is the most often used point in gynecological problems. It is often said to be forbidden to use in pregnancy because it may bring too much qi to the uterus, though this makes it an ideal point to induce labor if necessary. Spleen 6 is also well-indicated in male reproductive issues such as impotence.
Spleen 6 has a profound effect on the Spleen and its central digestive function. Spleen Qi Deficiency is perhaps the most common pattern of disharmony I see clinically. This is characterized by fatigue, distension after eating and loose stools. Spleen 6 is frequently combined with Stomach 36. Spleen deficiency can lead to Dampness, and conditions characterized by Dampness, including edema, obesity or heaviness in the limbs, can be treated with Spleen 6.
Because insomnia in TCM is generally due to a deficiency of Blood or of Yin and the Spleen creates Blood and nourishes Yin, Spleen 6 is an important point for insomnia. Spleen 6 is also used to treat urinary tract problems which are often due to deficiency or Dampness.
