Heart 7 is an acupuncture point located on the pinky side of the wrist at the wrist crease. It is also called Shen Men or Spirit Gate. As the name suggests, this point has a profound effect on the spirit or mind, which in Chinese medicine is an aspect of the Heart. Mania, depression, dementia and psychosis are all often treated with this point. Sleep is also related to the spirit and this point is important for treating insomnia, often combined with Spleen 6. This point has a very calming effect. If a patient is apprehensive about acupuncture, it has been recommended to needle this point first to relax them.
Heart 7 also has an effect on the more physical aspects of the Heart. Palpitations are a classic indication of a Heart disorder in Chinese medicine and regardless of their cause they can be treated with Heart 7.
The fact that Heart 7 is an effective point in the treatment of enuresis or bedwetting may at first be surprising, but if we consider that this disorder is often associated with anxiety and that it occurs during sleep, it actually makes a lot of sense.
