Natural Treatment for Acne

Many people think of treating acne with topical creams or ointments because it is a topical condition. However, the acne we see is actually an expression of an internal imbalance as the skin grows from the inside out and is used by the body as an outlet for toxins. It is much more effective to use internal remedies when treating acne.

Acupuncture for Acne

It may surprise some people to hear that acupuncture is an effective natural treatment for acne. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, acne is usually characterized by a Damp Heat pattern. In TCM this is referred to as an Excess condition and acupuncture is particularly effective in treating Excess conditions. The acupuncture points will be selected with the goal of clearing Dampness and Heat and addressing any energetic imbalances that may have predisposed the patient to accumulate Damp Heat.

Homeopathy for Acne

There are several homeopathic remedies that are excellent for the natural treatment for acne. It is always the case with homeopathy that a remedy must be chosen to fit the individual case, so there is no one remedy for acne as a disease, but each individual with acne may get a different remedy that addresses him or her holistically.

Diet and Acne

Dietary changes can often improve acne. Trans-fatty acids from partially hydrogenated oils or margarines should be avoided, as should refined carbohydrates such as table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup. Some people benefit from avoiding dairy products such as milk, cheese and ice cream. One important aspect in the natural treatment of acne that is often overlooked is an adequate intake of fiber from fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Nutritional Supplements for Acne

Perhaps the most important nutrient in the natural treatment for acne is Vitamin A. It is involved in the production of new skin and the regeneration of tissues. Keep in mind that women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take supplementatl Vitamin A. Other important nutrients are Selenium, Vitamin E and Zinc, preferably as zinc picolinate. Many people also benefit from 2 tablespoons per day of Brewer’s yeast.
